SAWIP was founded in 2007, as an extension of the well-established Washington Ireland Program for Service and Leadership (WIP) – a program of personal and professional development aimed at cultivating future generations of leaders for a post-conflict Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
After two years of initial research and piloting the program in South Africa, five interns were selected from the University of Cape Town in 2007. During the period 2008 to 2013 recruitment extended incrementally to the Universities of Stellenbosch and the Western Cape. Extension to Gauteng universities began in 2013 with the University of Pretoria. The team in 2016 included 20 students from the four universities.
