Community engagement is the post-Washington, D.C. focus of the SAWIP curriculum. The Class of 2014 in the Western Cape designed a youth development focused community engagement project, and recruited participants from high schools in Khayelitsha, Manenberg, and Philippi.
The first session, held at the Leadership College in Manenberg, was implemented on Saturday, 13 September 2014. This session focused on participants and SAWIP facilitators getting to know one another, and establishing trust.
The second session, also held at the Leadership College, and implemented on Saturday, 20 September 2014, focused on Human Centred Design (HCD). Participants learned about the HCD process, and how it could be applied to help address the challenges they face in their communities. This was done by means of fun, creative, and interactive group activities. Participants enjoyed the informal nature of the session, and both they and the SAWIP facilitators appreciated the opportunity to learn from and be encouraged by each other.
The third and final session, which will be implemented on Saturday 27 September 2014, will focus on constitutional literacy and tertiary education.
