We, as the SAWIP University of Pretoria Team of 2015, are eagerly anticipating sharing what we have been taught through our SAWIP experience with the learners of our partner school, Seshegong Secondary School, in Olievenhoutbosch, Gauteng.
The aim of the project is to empower, enrich and build leadership competencies of forty participants who serve on the school’s Representative Council of Learners.
Interactive sessions will be carried out over three consecutive weekends in August and September. The first day will cover the topics of constitutional literacy and civic education as well as human migration. Sessions will encourage greater discussion on and consideration of issues of rights and responsibilities, diversity and inclusion, race relations and active citizenry.
The second day will focus on building verbal and non-verbal communication skills, with a special focus on conflict management and resolution. In addition, information on opportunities at tertiary institutions will be shared so as to encourage the learners to consider their choices as well as plan and prepare for their futures as productive citizens who are active in building our country.
On the third day the learners will be taken on a tour of the UP campus so as to introduce them to university life and excite and encourage them to work hard towards realising their dreams. This excursion will also include some hard skill development including CV writing and the filling out of, sometimes, intimidating university applications.
Through the process of empowering we will be empowered, and will ideally create a platform for the transfer of ideas and sharing of resources amongst our youth.
