Olebelie from SAWIP 2007 speaking at the Congressional Forum

The South Africa-Washington Internship Program (SAWIP) is an emerging youth leadership program that is designed to empower and develop a new generation of young leaders who are committed to building upon South Africa’s progress and growing a stronger and robust civic society. SAWIP identifies students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential that demonstrate a commitment to investing in others and solving complex social problems like poverty, health, education and poor governance.

Based on the Washington Ireland Program for Service and Leadership (WIP), which has been successfully serving Northern Ireland and Ireland’s youth since 1995, SAWIP affords university students from South Africa a unique opportunity to find common ground through a course of mutual understanding in the multicultural environment of the United States of America. Each group of students has much to offer given their history.

This Program is the first program for South African students tailored to a select group of motivated and selfless individuals to offer them unique perspectives – including Irish, Northern Irish, and American – and opportunities that will challenge them to think and act differently in the goals of service and leadership.

SAWIP is designed to be organic in order to continuously meet the needs of a diverse group of students, adapt to current events, and to ensure we can assist in the personal and professional development of everyone.

The Essence of SAWIP

• Select motivated third-level students from South Africa and training them to serve as an effective leadership team;
• Build a trust between them that transcends racial,           socioeconomic and religious boundaries;
• Celebrate the group’s identity in diversity;
• Challenge the group to achieve personal and professional excellence; and
• Initiate them as graduates into a wider alumni network that continues to lead through service.
