The Island of Ireland and South Africa
South Africa and the island of Ireland share similar histories of segregation and violence and are now in the process of developing a stronger and unified society. However, despite these parallels, both have experienced different results in resolving long-standing conflict and managing their diverse societies. Today, both find themselves in different political and economic circumstances that need specific and targeted means to address outstanding issues and grievances.
SAWIP began as an initiative of the Washington Ireland Program for Service and Leadership (WIP), a program founded in 1995 that has tirelessly strived to unite the Protestant and Catholic youths of Northern Ireland and the youths of Northern Ireland and Ireland through a rigorous leadership curriculum and community service. Originally SAWIP began as an idea of WIP alumni and volunteers who recognized the benefits that WIP had to offer. Today, SAWIP has become a means for young South Africans to take on great responsibilities, develop a sense of mutual understanding and shared experiences that transcend identity and encourage others to contribute to positive social change.
