An engineering construction company that builds power plants in Africa. A company I had never heard anything about before the SAWIP experience.

Prior to Washington DC, our work placements were given to us and as I read ‘Symbion Power’ as mine, my heart shattered. I was in a room with people who were overjoyed about where they had been placed. All I could do was smile at everyone else who has happy. All I was really trying to do was hide my dissatisfaction. I had indicated to SAWIP that my interests were law, entrepreneurship and uplifting local communities. Little did I know that I had nothing to be disappointed about. Infact, I got exactly what God had planned for me. I tried to console myself over a video of President Obama speaking at Ubungo Symbion Power Plant in Tanzania. I must admit, it did make me feel better.

Well, it has been a full week since I started interning at Symbion and I couldn’t have been matched with a better company. Symbion builds power plants in Africa. How could I have not known about this? As a Law student, it is so easy to simply become immersed with the law ‘world’ to the point that you forget to research and become informed with other important sectors.

I am grateful for this opportunity. I am learning a lot about Symbion as a company, about myself and about what makes Symbion, amongst other American companies, successful.

I have learnt that as citizens of the world, we need to diversify the knowledge we obtain from the media. It is important to learn something about everything because ultimately, dialogue is the first step to finding solutions for issues that different countries face, however, one must be able to contribute and make suggestions to what the solution could be and so diversifying our knowledge is key.

Symbion has a great culture as far as I can tell. They truly practice teamwork. They have been accommodating considering the fact that they were preparing a pre-qualification for a bid when I first got there. I am excited about the DC journey. I believe that I am still going to learn more and I am open to that. I cannot wait for the days to unfold.
