“Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.” - John Maxwell

The RCL learners

Session on Time and Stress Management

Over the last three weeks, the UP team had their Community Engagement Project at Seshegong Secondary School in Olievenhoutbosch.

The different sessions we had with these school learners covered topics on Mentorship and Leadership, Time and Stress Management, Entrepreneurship, Gender, Sex and AIDS, Future plans after school and then finally Writing skills. This upcoming Saturday we are taking the learners on an excursion to the heritage destination, Freedom Park. The purpose of this excursion is to acquaint learners with the many people who made a contribution to our country’s liberation. Afterwards, we are going to have a session on the relevant issues in South Africa at this point in time.

My teammates and I loved engaging with these learners. They are curious and excited about the future, even though their circumstances are not always pleasant. They strive for so much more than what life gives them. These learners are the future leaders and it is important that those before them help them pave the way towards success.

What I loved about our Community Engagement Project was seeing how my fellow teammates facilitated sessions with so much passion, enthusiasm, and dedication. They truly want to make a difference in the lives of these school learners and also in the lives of the people in their communities.

Not only have they grown significantly in their leadership but also on a personal level. With projects like this, it is also of importance to understand your team as well as each individual’s strengths and weaknesses in order to create a team dynamic that succeeds.

The Community Engagement Project gave me firsthand knowledge and insights on community issues which we are surrounded by every day. This project made me realise how true John Maxwell’s quote is. I know fully grasp the true importance of investing your energy and knowledge into our young upcoming civic leaders.

Without us, the leaders of today, we won’t have leaders in the future.
