The South Africa-Washington International Program is helping to inspire, prepare and support South African youth to lead a sustainable democracy with a peaceful and prosperous future for all its citizens.

Brian N Currin

Brian is a BA LLB graduate from the University of Stellenbosch. He also has post- graduate qualifications in Labour Law and Industrial Relations from the University of South Africa and Constitutional law from the University of Witwatersrand. He is a certified trained mediator.

Brian practised as an attorney from 1977 until 1987 specializing in Labour Law and Human Rights. In 1987 he was appointed founding National Director of Lawyers for Human Rights by the organization’s National Board which included South Africa's most respected senior human rights lawyers: Jules Browde SC, Arthur Chaskelson SC, who subsequently became the first President of South Africa's Constitutional Court post 1994, George Bizos SC, Nelson Mandela's lawyer, and Prof John Dugard who served as Judge on the International Court of Justice and as a Special Rapporteur for both the former United Nations Commission on Human Rights and the International Law Commission.

Whilst at Lawyers for Human Rights Brian qualified as a mediator in 1988 through Independent Mediation Services of South Africa (IMMSA).

Since ending his term at Lawyers for Human Rights in 1994 Brian has specialized in mediation, negotiation, transformation facilitation and international peace process facilitation.

Besides South Africa, Brian has worked in many other countries including the USA, Northern Ireland, Britain, the Basque Country, Spain, France, Israel, Palestine, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Namibia, Malawi, Madagascar and Liberia.

Having spent 35 years in an evolving career spanning a human rights legal practice, constitutional law, human rights activism, national and international mediation, socio political transformation and peace process facilitation, Brian has assembled a unique set of skills in rights-based and interest-based conflict prevention, conflict management and conflict resolution working with communities, trade unions, employers, non-governmental organisations and governments both in South Africa and internationally.
