SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION DRIVEN BY SOUTH AFRICA’S EMERGING, SERVANT LEADERS

 

SAWIP inspires, develops and supports annual teams of interns and its whole alumni body to bring about community development through social projects amongst the most disadvantaged and marginalised South Africans.

Curriculum

SAWIP’s curriculum is designed to achieve the following outcomes:

  • The implementation of community engagement projects to benefit and empower the poor and marginalized;
  • Capable, young servant leaders with global understandings who are equipped for and active in community development to achieve social justice;
  • Nation Formation and Nation Building.

The curriculum follows themes aligned to South Africa’s National Development Plan and promotes personal development for servant leadership. It is structured and organized in the following way:

April and May - South Africa

  • Selection Camp
  • Orientation Camp
  • Weekly development sessions and experiences
  • Individual community service projects
  • Fundraising by students

June and July - Washington, DC

  • Team members living with American host families
  • Development sessions building on the curriculum begun in South Africa and providing global perspectives and experience
  • Part-time work exposure at various government, NGO and private organizations
  • Site visits to cultural landmarks around Washington, DC
  • A long weekend in New York City which exposes students to both the political and financial sectors, including a meeting with the South African UN Delegation.
  • Congressional Forum
  • Event at the South African Embassy in Washington, D.C.
  • Colloquium and reception hosted in partnership with the Woodrow Wilson Centre
  • Engagement with young leaders from the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, Israel, Palestine and the United States of America

August - October – South Africa

  • Weekly development sessions and experiences
  • Team Community Engagement Project
  • Individual written evaluative program reports submitted
  • Feedback and Reflection discussion with SAWIP Board (SA)
  • Graduation and induction into the Alumni Network
