I am honoured by the opportunity to have been placed at the International Finance Corporation, which is the private sector arm of the World Bank.
Besides the alignment of fields given the fact that I am a Finance major, I was drawn into the work done at this developmental institution by their vision.
The World Bank Group aims to end poverty and boost shared prosperity.
-Being from South Africa and having seen poverty issues first hand, I’d like to believe that I will give my work extra extra effort, and would like to make a significant and meaningful contribution-no matter how small it may be.
Delving deeper into the IFC’s vision, it reads as follows “That people should have the opportunity to escape poverty and improve their lives”
I feel quite lucky because the overarching visions of the organisation that I am working for overlap with my personal business mantra’s and key drivers.
Essentially I believe that the private sector can be a better and more responsible player in society. Given its efficiency, scalability and high network of skilled individuals businesses have deeper pockets for growth, increased mobility and greater potential to deliver good solutions to challenges that our world faces.
We live in a fairly complex world, and I believe that going forward younger individuals who will work in financial markets will embrace this notion of “deepened responsibility” and that instead of being driven by profits we will extend our values towards good initiatives.
I’m looking forward to this opportunity and most exciting adventure in Washington DC and at the IFC,thanks to SAWIP for making this opportunity possible…..we’re only beginning to scratch the surface.
