Live-A-Legacy

The SAWIP Thembi Losi: Leadership and Legacy Award was awarded posthumously to Thembakazi Losi and presented to Mr. Graham Losi and Ms. Nomvuyiseko Fyrene Losi by Phiwe Ndinisa (SAWIP Board Member and Alumnus 2012) and Kim Williams (SAWIP Programme Manager).

On Saturday 15 March 2014 the SAWIP Alumni Association together with the University of Cape Town, School of Economics; University of Cape Town, Education Development Unit; Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, and the University of Cape Town, Fuller Hall Residence hosted the Thembi Losi Celebratory Service.

At the service the SAWIP Thembi Losi: Leadership and Legacy Award was awarded posthumously to Thembakazi Losi and presented to her mother and grandfather.

As of 2014 the Thembi Losi: Leadership and Legacy Award will be awarded at each SAWIP Graduation Ceremony to a SAWIP graduand who most reflects symbolic qualities of Thembi’s favourite flower; Orchids. These qualities include: love, generosity, fortitude and the ability to work with others.

Like Thembi, orchids are easily distinguishable from other flowers. They are unique, exotic flowers which are said to represent magnificence, beauty, wisdom, thoughtfulness, luxury and strength.

Thembi was a multifaceted young lady; like the orchid she was unique in every way, she was magnificent, wise, thoughtful, strong and she had an appreciation for the finer things of life. Orchids bring about the universal message of love, which is something that Thembi effortlessly showed to many.

Orchids rely on light to grow. Likewise, Thembi’s light was her spiritual beliefs and support from her family and friends which enabled her to fully bloom. Orchids are generous, they have multiple flowers on a single stem and this displays and personifies their generosity. Thembi was a team player and she worked well with others.

It is in this symbolism and the qualities which Thembi reflected as a servant leader that form the basis of the leadership attributes and criteria for the award.

Fittingly these symbolisms and qualities can be found in Thembi’s name as follows;

T – TENACITY

H – HUMILITY

E – ENTHUSIASM

M – MOTIVATION

B – BALANCE

I – INTEGRTY
