US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Inspires South African Youth

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

“There is a special responsibility for the young people of South Africa...You will decide whether South Africa moves forward and not backward. You will decide whether South Africa seeks to erase old dividing lines in global politics… Our own partnership – not only between our governments, but between our people – can grow deeper and stronger if both of us remember our respective histories and the obligations they impose if we keep focused on the future and move toward it together.” – US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a speech on “Going Global: the U.S.-South Africa Partnership” at The University of the Western Cape on 8th August 2012. SAWIP team members and alumni were privileged to attend the speech on the invitation of The Ambassador of the United States of America, Donald H. Gips, with the Rector and Vice Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape, Professor Brian O’Connell and the Director of the School of Government, Professor Chisepo Mphaisha. SAWIP 2011 Alumnus Abednigo Nkosi noted that “it becomes unreal when you hear Hillary Clinton commend Former President Thabo Mbeki’s words: ‘Global problems sometimes require African solutions.’ The statement epitomized the very core message of her speech, which made me appreciate the future of our country. It solidified our roles as young leaders in driving the change in South Africa and in the world.”

SAWIP is proud to be connecting the youth of South Africa with US families, organizations, professionals and the many other individuals they meet during their time in the United States. We are working together to create strong, ethical leaders with a global perspective, and we believe we can move towards Hillary Clinton’s envisioned future together.
