Here are some other things you need to know...

Your University/Faculty will be informed of your selection and may be asked to verify your academic information.

You are required to complete the practical requirements of the programme to the best of your ability and deliver quality work during your service project.

While in Washington, your contract binds you to:

  • Observing programme curfews.
  • No underage drinking or abusive use of alcohol.
  • No behaviour that would bring the programme into disrepute.
  • Fitting in with your host family and treating them with respect.
  • Delivering quality work at your professional exposure placement.
  • Failure to comply could mean a participant is immediately sent home at their own expense.

What will it cost you?

Students who do not have the financial means to cover their own personal expenses are still strongly encouraged to apply. Lack of means should never mean lack of opportunity. You may apply for financial assistance if you are accepted into the program. Financial need will be assessed on a case- by-case basis.

This program is aimed at developing your service leadership potential and strives to select exceptional individuals who are creative and are not daunted by a challenge. The first task that we set for Team members each year is a fundraising one. We ask each student to raise a minimum of R7 000 towards their participation in the program. This is a small proportion of the total program cost of R100 000 per student. We encourage students to use this as an opportunity to develop a range of skills which are involved in eliciting financial investment in a ‘cause’. These are not developed by merely asking parents for a cheque! We look forward each year to learning about the innovative methods that Team members use, and the people or institutions that they approach in raising this contribution towards SAWIP.

The funds you raise contribute towards the following program costs which are incurred by SAWIP in South Africa:

  • Orientation Camp
  • Curriculum sessions
  • Return flight to Washington, D.C.
  • US Visas
  • Travel Insurance
  • Team community service
  • Program Evaluation
  • Graduation
  • Alumni Induction into the Alumni Network
